Arsenal as divided as ever...Signing Lacazette won't solve the problem

First day of the season, at home to Leicester. That is when it all starts up again, if the result isn't right. Then away at Stoke and Liverpool, fixtures that are never easy. By the time Arsenal return to the Emirates to play Bournemouth on September 9, they could all be at each other's throats: just like last season. Ivan Gazidis, the chief executive officer, stood at a meeting with supporters last Thursday and pleaded for unity, but he isn't going to see that, unless the team gets off to a flyer. There is a fundamental disconnect at the club's heart now. Last season, when Arsenal were the only occupants of the Premier League's top six to miss out on the Champions League, Gazidis promised change. That failure was going to be a 'catalyst for change', in fact. And then Arsenal won the FA Cup and Arsene Wenger signed his new contract. And there's the problem, because Wenger doesn't think Arsenal need change. He thinks they need him. His philosophy, his...

Stoichkov: 'Messi compared to legends, Ronaldo compared to Messi'

The former striker is no doubt that the Barcelona man is the finest player of his generation, with his rival at Real Madrid too selfish in his game Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is “unequivocally number one” in the world, with Cristiano Ronaldo not in his league, according to Hristo Stoichkov. The Real Madrid forward remains locked in a personal battle with an eternal rival from Camp Nou for the right to be considered the best player on the planet. Ronaldo is the current holder of the Ballon d’Or and favourite to draw level with Messi on five wins apiece in 2017. Stoichkov, though, believes the Argentine holds the advantage when it comes to true icon status, with his talents compared to those of the past while Ronaldo is compared to Messi. The former Barca striker told Sport Express: “Messi - unequivocally number one, he always plays for the team. Crazy technique, intelligence, and yet Messi - not selfish, it is very important. “People compare Messi with Di Stefano , Pele , Cruyff . But Ron...

OFFICIAL: Man City sign Monaco star Bernardo Silva on a five-year deal

OFFICIAL: Man City sign Monaco star Bernardo Silva on a five-year deal, for reported £43m transfer fee. The Portuguese playmaker will arrive at the Etihad having just helped the French side to the Ligue 1 title and the Champions League semi-finals. He began his career at Benfica, where he impressed for their B side in the Segunda Division, and in the summer of 2013 he went to the Under 19 European Championships where he was named in the top 10 talents by UEFA reporters after helping Portugal to the semi-finals of the competition. He moved to Monaco in 2014 on a season-long loan move having made three appearances for Benfica's first team – but so impressive were his displays in France, the deal was made permanent six months into the agreement. Silva’s guile helped them finish third in Ligue 1 and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they beat Arsenal in the last 16 after a brilliant first-leg victory at the Emirates put them in a commanding position. Having finish...

Arsenal make Alexis Sanchez huge £270,000 offer to stay at the Emirates

Arsenal have made another offer to contract rebel Alexis Sanchez in a bid to keep him from Bayern Munich’s clutches. The deal is understood to be about £270,000 a week, short of the £300,000 the Chile star is demanding. However, the offer is loaded with incentives taking it closer to the figure he wants. Further talks are planned after Arsenal face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Bayern are tipped to land Sanchez if he refuses to sign a new deal this summer, and Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested. Speculation that he has already decided heightened this week when the Chile FA accidentally listed him as a Bayern player. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also due to discuss a new deal after the final. He is entering the final year of his contract, and Liverpool are showing serious interest in him.
